The Crust 1.0 Global Events Guide: Solar Flares & Defense

Solar Flare, Epidemics, and Meteorites are the three documented Global Events in The Crust 1.0. What the developer has said about each, what the wiki documents, and what is still unverified.

The Crust Surface Base and Solar Installation Under Solar Flare Conditions

Sourcing note: This page is built from the official 1.0 release announcement on the Steam news feed for AppID 1465470 and the community wiki on wiki.gg. Solar Flare, Epidemic, and Meteorite text are developer-stated; the wiki does not yet have dedicated articles for any of the three events.

Solar Flare

The 1.0 announcement describes Solar Flare as a randomly occurring event with two possible outcomes, both stated by the developer:

“This event occurs randomly and can either trigger increased power output from your solar panels (but that’s not certain =)) or damage your buildings and the colonists working at their posts on the surface. But your brave scientists will come up with an elegant defense against this event too.”

Three things to extract from that paragraph:

  1. Solar Flare fires randomly. There is no scheduling published.
  2. The benefit (boosted solar output) is not guaranteed. The parenthetical “(but that’s not certain =))” is the developer’s hedge. Players cannot plan around it.
  3. The cost (surface damage) hits buildings and colonists. Underground infrastructure is not mentioned.

The “elegant defense” sentence promises a science-tree countermeasure but does not name it. If you have observed it in-game, the developer has not stated a name or effect number.

Epidemics

The 1.0 announcement is unusually direct about Epidemics:

“Epidemics break out when the colony is in chaos and unsanitary conditions. They worsen colonist mood and work efficiency, and in the most neglected situations they can lead to colonist injuries and deaths. This event is easy to avoid by equipping rooms with showers and toilets and by keeping a positive balance of medicine on the base.”

Three actionable facts fall out of that paragraph:

  1. Cause: unsanitary conditions and chaos, not bad luck.
  2. Effect: lower mood, lower work efficiency; in worst cases, injury or death.
  3. Prevention: showers + toilets in colonist rooms, and a positive medicine balance.

The 1.0 announcement introduces a Shower/Toilet module in the same release, and the colonist-management page on this site describes the morale and workforce maths in detail. The Anti-Epidemic defense is therefore a build-toolkit answer, not a tech-tree answer.

Meteorites and the Anti-Meteorite Laser Cannon

Meteorites are the headline defensive event in 1.0. The developer describes them in two places: the Global Events section and a separate “New module” subsection. Quoting the announcement directly:

“Meteorites are one of the new events. They fall one at a time or in a whole shower, and you cannot choose when or where they land. The process is, of course, random, but our programmers have kept quiet about the probability they set ;).”

“While your base is small, most rocks land on empty ground and leave behind debris rich in resources, including rare minerals, so for a while you will be happy about every impact.”

“But over time, the base grows and there is less and less empty space. Before you know it, a meteorite will land exactly where you spent three hours in Planning Mode. We did tell you that production on the Moon is no easy business, didn’t you?”

The 1.0 answer is the Anti-Meteorite Laser Cannon:

“For this stage, there is the Anti-Meteorite Laser Cannon. It shoots down rocks as they approach, but not for free: each shot costs one Energy Cell, after which it needs to recharge. One cannon does not cover the whole base, so decide what to protect first: the reactor or the bar.”

That paragraph names three concrete behaviours:

  1. Resource cost per shot: 1 Energy Cell per intercepted rock.
  2. Cooldown: the cannon must recharge after each shot.
  3. Coverage limit: one cannon does not cover the whole base; coverage is positional.

The announcement does not publish a recharge time, a coverage radius, or a damage number.

What this page does not claim

  • No published probability table for any of the three events. The 1.0 announcement explicitly says the meteorite probability is held quiet by the developers.
  • No published severity scaling for either outcome of Solar Flare.
  • No published medicine quantity that prevents Epidemics — only the qualitative rule that the balance must be positive.
  • No published Anti-Meteorite Laser Cannon build cost, recharge time, or coverage radius. The announcement describes the module qualitatively.
  • No event beyond these three is documented. Any “Storm” or “Quake” or other event name circulating in player posts is not in the 1.0 announcement text on the Steam news feed.

Blueprint FAQs

What are the Global Events in The Crust 1.0? +

The 1.0 announcement documents three Global Events: Solar Flare, Epidemics, and Meteorites. The Anti-Meteorite Laser Cannon is the new module that defends against Meteorites by firing Energy Cells.

How does the Anti-Meteorite Laser Cannon work? +

The 1.0 announcement says the Anti-Meteorite Laser Cannon shoots down approaching rocks, costs one Energy Cell per shot, and needs to recharge afterward. It does not cover the whole base, so the player has to choose what to protect first.

How do you avoid Epidemics? +

The announcement is explicit: Epidemics break out when the colony is in unsanitary conditions. They can be avoided by equipping rooms with showers and toilets and keeping a positive medicine balance.

Can Solar Flares help instead of hurt? +

The 1.0 announcement says Solar Flare 'can either trigger increased power output from your solar panels (but that's not certain =)) or damage your buildings and the colonists working at their posts on the surface.' In other words, the benefit is probabilistic and not guaranteed.
